๐ณ A neighborhood treasure. Palisades-Kepler State Park sits on high bluffs above the Cedar River, about four miles west of Mount Vernon and roughly 12 miles from Cedar Rapids and Marion. It has been a favorite for a Sunday walk, a picnic or a family campout for generations, and this fall it is putting on quite a show.

What to see and do
๐ฅพ Hiking trails
About five to six miles of trails wind through hardwood forest and along the bluffs, including Cedar Cliff, Cool Hollow, Woodland, Lodge and Overlook trails. They are rugged and rocky, with steep spots and steps, so wear sturdy shoes and take your time.
๐ฃ The Cedar River
Anglers fish the river for catfish, bass and walleye, and there is a boat ramp. The park advises against swimming in the river because of strong currents.
๐๏ธ Lodge and history
The park began in 1922, and the Kepler family donated their estate in 1928. In the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps built the stone lodge and other rustic buildings. The lodge can be rented, and public lodge viewings are held the third Wednesday of each month from 2 to 4 PM.
โบ Camping and picnics
There are 45 campsites and a few cabins, plus open picnic shelters. The campground is reservable April 1 to November 15 and is closed for the winter from November 16 to March 31.
